Choose Good Soil

It is important to understand the three types of soil spoken about in scripture, for they can serve as a lesson not just for our spiritual lives but also for our physical lives. The parable of the sower found in Matthew 13:3-9 speaks of four soils that represent four different ways of responding to the Word of God:

  • The first type of soil is the rocky ground, which represents those who hear the Word and quickly accept it with joy. However, they have no deep roots and the word fails to take root in their hearts (Matthew 13:5-6).

The second type of soil is a shallow soil filled with thorns and weeds. This represents those who hear the Word but are choked out by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life (Matthew 13:7).

The third type of soil is a path where birds snatch away the seed before it can take root. This represents those who hear the Word but fail to understand what they have heard due to its lack of spiritual depth (Matthew 13:19).

The fourth type of soil is good soil, which represents those who hear the Word and accept it with humility and understanding. This is the only type of soil that will bear fruit (Matthew 13:23).

It is important to remember that each one of us have our own unique “soil” or circumstances. We can choose to take either a good path or a bad path depending on how we respond to the Word of God. It is our responsibility to work with what soil we have and ensure that the Word takes root in our hearts and bears much fruit. So let’s take heed of this lesson from scripture and strive to be like good soil—humble, understanding, and obedient to the word of God.

The Bible also speaks of another type of soil—the firm, unyielding soil that is found in our hearts. This is the kind of heart God desires for us to have so that we can be strong and steadfast in His service (Deuteronomy 29:18). It is important to remember that a good soil does not always bring immediate success or fruitfulness. A good soil requires patience, dedication and hard work. Let us be patient, determined and devoted to cultivating our soil so that it can bear much fruit in the Lord’s service.

God is faithful and He will provide all the necessary nutrients for a fruitful harvest if we only take the time to diligently cultivate our own hearts and minds in accordance with His Word. By doing this, we can have assurance that our spiritual lives will be blessed and fruitful just as God desires. Take this lesson of soil in faith and remember that it is a reminder to seek the Lord with all of our hearts in order to bring about a healthy, firm, and unyielding soil within us all!

May God bless each one of us with the knowledge and understanding to cultivate the soil of our hearts so that we may bear much fruit for His glory. Amen!
